I am more
inclined to look at fall as particularly suited to starting new things.
Memories of summer have faded, the new school year beckons with
the promise of new ideas, new friends. The library has experienced a
few changes this summer. Briana Wickham, our most experienced
Page, is off to pursue studies at College of New Jersey. Michael
Arietta, a TZHS student, is our newest Page. Cheryl McNeil has joined
the Patron Services staff and will be helping out in both the Adult
Reference and Youth Services areas.
The library invites all our patrons to become Friends of the Library.
Details of membership levels can be found in the newsletter. Membership fees will enable the library to expand the number of museum passes available, fund special purchases and programs.
The Board of Trustees is actively seeking candidates to join the board.
Information and application forms are available at the Front Desk or
in Reference.
“The Greatest Generation: A Salute to WW II Veterans” program
received Honorable Mention in the 2010 RCLS Member Library Adult
Program of the Year competition. Many thanks to Adult Program
Coordinator, Bobbi Chertok, for organizing the event, and to all our
friends who attended the program. Please see the calendar in the
newsletter or check out the library website (http://www.orangeburglibrary.org/) for upcoming events.
I would also like to thank everyone who participated in the Children’s
Summer Reading Program and our Adult Reading Raffle! In both programs, users were invited to submit reviews on the books they read – patron reviews, recommendations (and plenty of other suggestions) are posted on the library blog -(http://orangeburglibraryblog.blogspot.com/ ).
We look forward to a wonderful fall – and encourage you to stop by
– there’s more than books at the Orangeburg Library!
Tell us what you think. commute by auto between Westchester and Rockland. These are great stories, engaging and broadening. Each deals, in its own way, with different aspects of recent American life and trends – from the Cold War of the 1950’s, the counter-culture that evolved from the 1960’s anti-war movement and finally, Jane Smiley’s account of the greedy exuberance of the 1990’s. BTW, Richard Poe’s narrations are outstanding.

Underworld – Don DeLillo [CD (unabridged), read by Richard Poe. Novel: 1997 on 27 discs.

A portrait of the decade, this wide-ranging work touches on the search for Bobby Thompson’s 1951 home-run baseball, avant-garde art utilizing de-commissioned B-52 bombers, and how a 1950s teenage hood from New York is transformed by the Jesuits into a respectable man, managing hazardous waste. Don’t be discouraged by the 27 discs – by the time I was half way through, I began looking for excuses to spend time in the car.

Drop City - T.Coraghessan Boyle, [CD (unabridged), read by Richard Poe. Novel: 2003 on 16 discs.

Set in the late 60’s, this intriguing tale traces the journey of a displaced California hippie commune to a new life in Alaska and the inter-cultural clashes that ensue when trippy bell-bottomed folks meet the plaid-clad trappers of the Alaskan bush.

Good Faith – Jane Smiley [CD (unabridged book), read by Richard Poe. Novel: 2003 on 11 discs.

Pulitzer Prize winner Smiley once again opens a convincing fictional window on an American subculture: the unbridled operators who hyper-inflated the real estate bubble. Smiley's amusing plot is charged with energy, her sense of time and place is on target, and her research into the ways and means of real estate development is seamlessly integrated.

I recommend taking them along for the ride.

At the library we continually strive to bring ‘new’ to our patrons – in the ever-changing collection of books, DVDs, programs, and services we offer.

Did you know that we added over 750 new books to the collection in 2009? Acquired more than 630 DVDs, Recorded Books, and CDs? We also installed a new front door, a new color printer/copier for public use, and substantially increased our Internet bandwidth. The library also sponsored almost 250 programs, attracting about 4000 adults and children to the library. 65,000 people visited the library to use the Internet, ask reference questions, borrow books, magazines, movies and games, study and take language and computer literacy programs.

2010 promises to be another active year at Orangeburg Library. We have already added over 200 new digital items to the physical collection, and make thousands of more digital books and music accessible from home via OverDrive.

We are experimenting with increased digital communications with our patrons – via our website, Facebook page and various blogs. Watch your email for a chance to ‘opt-in’ to many of these new ways to use our collection and services.

Please visit; the staff is eager to help you find what you need and introduce some of our new services.William C. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed with the number and types of digital devices demanding your attention, you are not alone.

“Mass digitization has created unheralded choice and desire for American consumers,” said Ed Moran, director of product innovation for Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications group. “Now, more than ever, consumers have the independence to enjoy what they want, when they want it, and where they want it – but increasingly, they are also choosing to create content themselves, or re-working other people’s content.”

We are certainly experiencing this trend at the library. Although circulation of Printed materials (Adult & Children) has been fairly steady over the last five years, we have seen dramatic reductions in the circulation of tape-based formats such as VHS and cassettes. Circulation statistics for digital media (DVDs, Books on CD, Music CDs) continue their upward trends, and the library is acquiring more and more material in digital format to satisfy these wants.

The library is also engaged in creating content that we hope our patrons find helpful and useful to satisfy their reading and informational needs. A lover of nature, Ms. Greenberg is particularly inspired by the colors and shapes of iris, tulips, roses and chrysanthemums.

Using a variety of watercolor techniques, Ms. Greenberg's floral interpretations are as fresh and varied as the flowers she sees and those she imagines.

Helen Greenberg trained with a number of prominent artists including Beverly Colgen and Jo Blanchet at the Rockland Center for the Arts, and she has participated in workshops at art centers in New York and Massachusetts. She has shown her watercolors in group and solo shows in Town Halls, Community Centers and libraries in the tri-state area. She saw them in concert a couple of times and says that she couldn't tell what music was being played over the screeches of the obsessive fans. Apparently, there were ambulances on standby, and girls were being wheeled out of the concert hall after having fainted from shock at seeing The Beatles in person.

The music that this legendary British group created will no doubt continue to go on in history as some of the most iconic music ever made. How many times have you heard someone singing a variation of "Hey Jude" to a friend to cheer them up? Or a group of laughing teenagers belt out "I Am the Walrus" just for the fun of it? Have you ever wished that you could learn these songs and rock out like The Beatles for yourself? Well your dream has just been granted.

On September 9th, the new edition of RockBand hit stores: The Beatles RockBand. People had pre-ordered this game since it's unveiling in June and most could not wait to get it home and play it for themselves. Only a few days ago, I had the opportunity to play this game and it was, without a doubt, the most fun I've had playing a video game.

I understood what my aunt meant when she said it was a rush to see The Beatles playing before you; the graphics on this game are so incredibly life-like to the actual musicians that I spent more time staring at them then concentrating on the game. At points though, instead of the usual computer-generated, rainbow colored, background, there is actual footage of The Beatles recording their songs in the studio.

As for the tour section of the game, the player starts off as The Beatles did; playing in all the same locales in the exact same order on their rise to fame. As you play the tour, and unlock more venues to play in, the player also unlocks special photos and short videos about The Beatles. This game truly takes the player into The Beatles lifestyle; and to say that I was able to play guitar to "Revolution"? Yes, that is pretty incredible.

In occordance to the arrival of this new video game, all The Beatles albums have been digitally remastered, and deluxe versions are quickly climbing the charts as being some of the most popular music at the moment. Folks who were able to appreciate The Beatles in their heyday are now able to share that same love with their children, nieces, and nephews so that all generations can bond over these timeless songs and give new appreciation to the phrase "All you need is love."Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/01532982956309728962noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830846779171827565.post-21632449270143920002009-09-04T12:51:00.000-07:002009-09-04T13:52:11.180-07:00Random Summer ReadingThanks to all who participated in our adult summer reading program. It was quite a trip, especially in this Woodstock anniversary year.

A few summer weeks remain - maybe time for one or two more trips to the shore, lake or deck. Described on the book jacket flap as an 'almanac written to be read', Schott's is truly a miscellaneous collection of fascinating items compiled by Ben Schott, New York Times best-selling author. I thought I would share some of the interesting data filed under Reading in the Society & Health section of the new edition.

The National Endowment for the Arts 2007 report, To Read or Not to Read, focused on American literacy - the findings are somewhat depressing, especially for a librarian in the public sector:

The average American aged 15 - 24 spent only 7 minutes a day reading for pleasure. Older Americans, on average, spend about 20 minutes per day, with Seniors reading as much as 50 minutes each day.

The report notes that teenage literacy levels have declined at the same time as the decline in reading for pleasure, although our youngest readers have shown an improvement in reading levels. This makes me wonder whether the distractions of electronic games, music and video contribute to the decline as children move through adolescence.

While the library is consciously adding to our digital collection(s), we still have lots of books and printed material for your reading pleasure.

If you're interested, here's a link to the 98-page report: http://www.nea.gov/research/ToRead.PDF. Browsing the report should help to raise the national average!William C. Langhamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00737570679684147971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8830846779171827565.post-77040068921125805312008-12-20T21:41:00.000-08:002009-11-13T10:13:56.915-08:00LIBRARY 2.0
The Library 2.0 concept is the social and technological changes that are having an increasing impact on libraries, their staff, their patrons, and how they interact. The new tools were coming to enable patrons of all ages to suggest titles, write reviews and recommendations, and enable our librarians to enlist the entire community of readers in a collaborative effort to share their favorites - whether in print, on the web or in digital format - by using new networking tools such as wiki's and blogs. These new tools are now ready for your use.

So what is a blog, anyway? Generally speaking, it's an online journal comprised of links and postings in reverse chronological order, meaning the most recent posting appears at the top of the page. Blogs are "post-centric" -- the posting is the key unit -- rather than "page-centric," as with more traditional websites. Blogs typically link to other websites and blog postings, and many allow readers to comment on the original post, thereby allowing audience discussions.

We have totally revised our website (http://www.orangeburg-library.org) and created our initial foray into the Blogosphere! The blog is frequently updated with program information, the NYTimes Bestseller List, links to newly added DVD's, eBooks, and an extensive selection of music for your MP3 player. There is even a comments area following each section where you can suggest your recent favorites for sharing. And that's the point - we would like the library to be a place to discover the unexpected.
Please Visit our Library 2.0 at: http://orangeburglibraryblog.blogspot.com/.

William C.
